Lock down 3.0
6th class were treated to an insight into the writing proceas according to sepf published author Brendan Mc Donald. Through zoom we looked at the wholesome tale of Edward the Elephant who adapts to life on a farm. Brendan explained that it is important to know what we are good at and the look for help on the things that we find more difficult, for example Brendan is not an artist so he sought out an illustrator to help make his book a reality.
6th class had many questions about the writing process and Brendan emphasised the importance of planning and editing.
Maybe some of our students will be ispired to write their own book some day.
A portion of the profits from Elephant on the farm goes to Crumlin Children's Hospital.

Science week goes Digital in 6th class.
Winter in 6th Class.
November went by in flash in rang a sé. It was a month filled with science experimentation, research presentations and some song singing.
The core theme for Science Week 2020 was ‘Choosing our Future’ focusing on how science can improve our lives in the future, and in the present. Looking to the future gives us a sense of hope for life after Covid 19 lockdowns and strict regulations. We worked on some class experiments investigating the bacteria living on our hands, using balloons to support the weight of multiple students, and growing some super nutritious wheatgrass.
In Timahoe NS we have a strong tradition of having a Science fair during November, this year however we needed to adapt. The students of 6th class demonstrated their creativity and just how tech savvy they are by presenting their Science projects in an digital format. Students and parents (!) put in great efforts to carry out primary and secondary research in their chosen areas. Mrs Bergin, Mr McEvoy and Ms Moore enjoyed every project thoroughly - learning new and interesting facts from the students. Reverse learning!!
Our Timahoe Science Project winner was " Yellow or white? Which one will be the best when put to the test?" An original research question with data gathered from hurlers from across the country along with some primary research carried out in Timahoe GAA field. All of the projects were of a very high standard and the 6th class students should be very proud of themselves.
We returned to school after the halloween break and already began looking forward to Christmas. 2020 has been a year like no other so Ms Moore agreed to allow the C word and embrace the Christmas spirit a little bit early this year. Carol singing started early and we gathered the raw materials for making our Christmas wreaths. December is set to be an exciting and certainly festive month in Timahoe. We just can't wait for the Reindeer to return to the village green now.

School Year 2020/21.
Ms Moore & Rang a sé.
Welcome to Rang a Sé 20/21.
There are 18 students in our classroom this year, we feel really lucky to be on our own for 6th class. Our new teacher is Ms. Moore, she taught 2nd class last year.
Our classroom is bright, spacious and has a great view of the Timahoe round Tower. Everyone was thrilled to be back in school with their friends, we shared our special memories from lockdown and some of our Summer staycations.
** Did you know the word 'staycation' is a 'portmanteau' ?!**
As we settle into 6th class we endeavor to be good role models for the entire school body. As good role models we show respect to each other and school property while following the new safety protocols to keep everyone safe. As we reach the end of September we are getting used to the new school routine and have already put forward a compelling case to continue with no homework !! Ms. Moore is not convinced-yet.
As 6th class we have the opportunity to explore many learning avenues. Our recent hike up Fossey Mountain integrated PE and Science in one. We are now learning about bio diversity and the importance of hedge rows in our environment. Another perk of 6th class was being the first class to use our new iPads, we now have one device each and this made Seesaw and Kahoot very enjoyable. Next up is learning more about coding, who knows maybe Timahoe will be home to the next Bill Gates!
Ms. Moore reminds us everyday to be kind, do our best and always be curious.

Spooktacular Sixth Class.
Check out 6th class' impressive Autumnal art creations.
Our inspiration was Vincent Van Gogh's 'Avenue of Poplars in Autumn' created in October 1884 . The students explored the light and colour we see during the season of Autumn along with idea of perspective and texture in our art.
While Van Gogh paints a cottage we used the round tower as our focus while thinking of the magnificent tree archway on the Portlaois road. This mixed media project uses oil pastels, paints and crepe paper to add depth and texture.
We hope you enjoy.

Fourth and Fifth Class
Hello, we are fourth and fifth class. We have 31 children in our class altogether. We have 13 pupils in fourth class and 18 pupils in fifth class. We have lots to be excited about this year and are already hard at work.
We are training for Cumann na mBunscol at the moment and love getting out to practise and develop our skills. We are also busy preparing our Science projects for the Intel Mini Scientist Competition which takes place in October.
We are really looking forward to Panto this year. We are a very creative class and enjoy putting all our skills and talents to good use throughout the year. We use ICT often in our class to practise English and Maths. We enjoy using the laptops and ipads for games and activities such as Mathletics. We also use the laptops to research and present projects like our upcoming Science projects. We take part in Comhrá ar an Maidhc every week and love getting the chance to show off the Gaeilge we have learnt throughout the week.
Our first group of Mathletics Certificate Winners
October
October was a very busy month for Fourth and Fifth Class. When we finished competing in the Cumann na mBunscol competition we focused our attention to our Intel Mini Scientist projects. A lot of effort and time was dedicated to researching, investigating and putting projects together for presentation at the school science fair. We worked hard at home and in school on our projects and were very proud of our results. We are looking forward to seeing how Let’s Look Ammonia gets on at the regional finals. We also spent a lot of time on Mathletics and have earned many certificates for our work in Maths.
November
Fifth Class had two very exciting trips after the mid-term break. On our first Monday back, we traveled to Portlaoise College to take part in a woodwork session. We got to design and make our very own pencil holders. We really enjoyed working with our hands to sand, bore the holes and use the pyrography pen to burn our own designs on our pencil holders. It was also nice to see for ourselves what a busy day in a secondary school is like. On Tuesday, we traveled to Carlow IT to attended a science show called ‘How to Save the Climate in 45 Minutes’’ to celebrate Science Week. Dr. Ken showed us a lot of cool experiments to help us to understand Climate Change and we also learned a lot of interesting facts about how we are damaging our world and what we can do to help. We hope you enjoy looking at some photos of our activities and events. December In December, we participated in a Scratch programming session. We created sprites (characters) and developed code to bring our sprites to life. We had great fun and got great tips from Aiden to help us advance our knowledge and skill in Scratch Programming. We made a great effort to keep active in December through our 1km a day and Active Advent homework despite the cold weather. We took on a winter theme in our classroom creating icebergs in science, painting winter scenes and writing about icebergs, the northern lights and Christmas stories in creative writing. We are also in the full Christmas spirit creating secret elf Christmas presents for people in our class and doing kind deeds for our secret elf friends. We are looking forward to finding out who our secret elf friends were on Friday. We hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! From Fourth and Fifth Class. January We had a busy and exciting start to 2020 in our classroom. We started straight into swimming lessons after the Christmas break and have nearly completed our 6 weeks of lessons. We are also learning about water safety back in the classroom through the PAWS (Primary Aquatics Water Safety) from Water Safety Ireland. We have had a particular focus on the Arts in January. We were very nervous and excited to take part in auditions for the school panto, Robin Hood. There was great excitement when the parts were announced by Mrs Buckley. We are already hard at work, learning songs, rehearsing lines and getting to work on costumes. We can’t wait for March! We have designed and made tinfoil prints in art. We have also created paintings based on the theme of day and night which we have studied in Science. We focused on warm and cool colours and tint and shade. We are also working on designs for panto tickets at home and arms. We are continuing to work hard on our other subjects too. We have started our class novel ‘Shadow’ by Michael Morpurgo. We are earning lots of points and certificates on Mathletics and playing a lot of games in Gaeilge to help improve our oral language, grammar and writing skills. |
