October Update
Scoil Mhuire Fatima, Timahoe were actively promoting sustainable modes of transport during the recent Climate Action Week which ran from October 14th -20th. In pursuit of their 4th Green Schools Flag under the theme of Transport the school has been encouraging cycling, walking, carpooling and a park and stride model.
The Timahoe National School pupils along with their very active Green Schools committee decided to join in with other schools across Ireland to make their mark during Climate Action Week holding events to raise awareness and promote a positive change.
The children researched zero waste lunches in an effort to minimise ‘single use’ plastics and packaging. They had a very successful ‘No Waste’ week with all pupils cutting out waste completely from their lunchboxes. They plan to maintain these efforts throughout the year beginning with ‘No Waste Wednesdays’ and progressing from there.
Timahoe N.S strive to show that even little changes can make a big difference. Each class competed to win the “Greenest Class”, commuting to school using sustainable modes of transport. Students also created posters demonstrating the effects of climate change or ways to lower their carbon footprint. This and the great efforts to make the commute from home to school a little bit greener educate the children making genuine efforts to safeguard the future of our environment and climate.
As a final salute to Climate Action Week children linked their annual Halloween fancy dress competition to their Green Schools themes. This was done through their innovative, crafty and most importantly, environmentally friendly efforts to create costumes from recycled materials to promote awareness of sustainable modes of transport.
Travel cleaner and greener this school year!
Scoil Mhuire Fatima has started on our 4th Green-Schools theme, Travel. Green-Schools, work directly with participating schools, offering them support to encourage sustainable and active travel on the journey to school. Green-Schools Travel Officers help this student-lead programme to identify risks and barriers to active travel in their area and spread awareness of the best travel options. We have an enthusiastic Green-Schools committee in place since last term.
The aim of the Green-Schools Travel theme is to encourage students, parents and teachers to walk, cycle, scoot, Park ‘n’ Stride, use public transport or car pool instead of using the private car on the school run.
Spring is here and things are changing …like how we get around? How do you and your children get to Scoil Mhuire Fatima? If it’s always in the car is it possible to make a change and pick up a good habit at the beginning of the school year and begin to actively travel to Scoil Mhuire Fatima? Can you park ‘n stride with your child? Walk all the way or cycle or scoot? Maybe even car pool?
School traffic is a big deal these days. If you use the car less on the school run there are so many positives: you reduce congestion at our school gates, you reduce air pollution, you increase the health, awareness and alertness of your child before they’ve even got to their desk. Most importantly children love movement and to be physically active. They can chat to you and to their friends on the way. It also makes it easier for them to sit in class once they get there as they’ve been given a chance to move first thing in the morning.
With so many good reasons to get out of the car when you can why not get your children, and you, to Scoil Mhuire Fatima in a healthier, greener way this year.
Look out for exciting updates on our plans for Scoil Mhuire Fatima Travel flag from our Green-Schools committee…coming your way soon!
