Halloween 2020
Halloween might be a little different for us all this year given the restrictions that are in place but Junior Infants celebrated in style on the last day before midterm break.
Here is a little slideshow from the day and a special video for you all to see of Junior Infants performing 'Puca, Puca'! We hope you enjoy it and have a lovely break.

Off to a flying start!
Dia Dhaoibh go Léir,
It is very hard to believe that Junior Infants only stepped inside the doors of the school for the very first time a little over 6 weeks ago! It is like they have always been here.
They have been very busy indeed They are moving through their Jolly Phonics sounds at a great pace and are now a starting to learn about sounding out some words which have the sounds they know in them. They are practicing their patterns and writing their letters as well as listening to stories and learning rhymes. We have so much fun playing rhyming games.
All are picking up cúpla focail Gaeilge and it is wonderful to see them enjoy so many games and songs as Gaeilge. There have been a number of sing offs already!
There are lots of budding artists in the class – we have done drawing, painting and clay so far from self-portraits to painting ‘Happiness is..’ for Mental Health Awareness Week to clay hedgehogs.
We have done lots of work on the themes of ‘Myself’ and ‘My Family’ and ‘Autumn’ and now we are onto ‘Halloween’ – a favourite all around.
We even managed to walk a kilometre for European Week of Sport which turned out to be a great opportunity to spot some signs of Autumn around the school.
They are expert ‘handitizers’ at this stage and are taking all the new routines in their stride.
All in all it seems to be thumbs up from Junior Infants!!

Fáilte! Welcome!
This is a new and exciting time in your child’s life. During this year your child will meet new friends and have many new experiences. We now, teachers and parents, have the opportunity to work as partners to ensure the best for your child. While we don’t at this stage know exactly what the return to school will look like; there is some information we can give you now and we look forward to sharing more details and meeting with you as soon as we are in a position to do so. Rest assured, we will keep you up to date on relevant developments before your child’s first day in school.
First Day - A Happy One!
The first day in Junior Infants is a big one for both you and your child. No doubt there will be nerves mixed in with the excitement. This year things are (a little!) different to normal and the return to school in September will be a changed experience for all of us.
In the meantime, here are a few tips:
You can help make your child’s day simpler by having bags, jackets, shoes that they can manage by themselves and by packing lunch items that they can open and manage independently. In the current climate this is more important than ever – we highly recommend Velcro close shoes, short sleeved shirts (for ease when handwashing- buttons can be tricky) and lunches and bags that your child can open and manage by themselves. Bear in mind oranges, bananas, frubes, food in packets and juices with straws can be very difficult for a child to open.
Finally – and very importantly enjoy the morning!
Seating:
Your child will be given a special seat on their first day which will be their seat going forward (unless teacher makes changes to seating arrangements).
Breaks:
There are two breaks during a normal school day.
Timahoe N.S. has a healthy eating policy.
Children should bring healthy, nutritious lunches and snacks and are allowed to bring in one small treat on a Friday.
School Uniform:
Uniform:
Grey Shirt
Grey Trousers/Pinafore
Navy Cardigan/Jumper
Red Tie
Tracksuit: The school tracksuit (and comfortable footwear) should be worn on the days that Junior Infants are timetabled to have PE. Teacher will advise what days this will be. (School tracksuit is available to buy from Colgans or Shaws)
Curricular Areas:
We have a specific Oral language Programme used across the school along with use of stories, rhymes and games.
We use the Jolly Phonics Programme. This means that we teach letter sounds as opposed to the alphabet. There are 42 letter sounds which we introduce at a rate of 3 a week. Children learn the sound and its action and the correct formation to write each. Over time, and at varying paces the children will begin to recognise the letters and blend the sounds together to read words; and when writing a word they will begin to identify the sounds they hear in it and write down the corresponding letters.
Further information is available at https://www.jollylearning.co.uk/jolly-phonics-catalogue/parent-teacher-guides/ if you wish to check it out, but don’t worry we will advise you of what is happening as we move through each stage of the programme.
Books & materials:
The books and materials required by your child in class will be provided through the book rental scheme which will be payable to the school in September. This covers everything down to pencils, colours, copies & folders, so there is no need for your child to bring anything to school in their bag except lunch & a drink. Each child’s items will be stored separately and individually so there will be no sharing of resources/lunch etc. for the foreseeable future.
Assessment:
Your child’s teacher will continuously make informal assessments.
Parent - Teacher meetings usually take place during the first term of the school year. These provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress.
Please do not hesitate to contact the Junior Infant teacher during the school year if you are anxious about anything or have any concerns regarding your child’s learning.
Information:
Up to this year messages from school were usually sent as a note in children’s school bag or via text message. This will more than likely change to text messages and Aladdin Connect app this year (any necessary login details will be provided in September). Again, we will keep you up to date when we know more
If you change your contact details please inform the school to ensure you get school text messages.
Please ensure to advise the school of any allergies or special requirements your child may have.
Independence:
Once the children have settled into the school environment, as much independence as possible should always be encouraged.
Lastly, we at Scoil Mhuire Fatima will do all we can to help your child. We know nothing will ever replace your love and devotion to them - but we’re here to help them on their way to great things!
